Because I work in metadata daily, you’d think I’d have had no trouble with the lab. But I found it more challenging to do than I am used to. Jessica Serrano described the process clearly. However, I am used to editing most of my metadata through Collective Access. But Google Sheets is also an excellent way to break up the information. The Clemson Library is looking into other authority vocabularies to see if they might suit us more, but we currently use the Library of Congress Subject and Name authorities. We can add these to Local if there isn’t an entry for a name, place, or group. Subject Headings are done in a specific order, so the data fits the best practices to keep our vocabulary in a standard way. I tried Zooniverse and thought it was great that people could voluntarily work on projects that interest them. I investigated the project of North Carolina Primary Source Transcription project. I’m from North Carolina originally and grew up there, so I was curious. I haven’t worked with transcription very much. But this would be an excellent way to hone some skills while helping.
